Laughing With

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
When they’re starving or freezing or so very poor

No one laughs at God
When the doctor calls after some routine tests
No one’s laughing at God
When it’s gotten real late
And their kid’s not back from the party yet

No one laughs at God
When their airplane start to uncontrollably shake
No one’s laughing at God
When they see the one they love, hand in hand with someone else
And they hope that they’re mistaken

No one laughs at God
When the cops knock on their door
And they say we got some bad news, sir
No one’s laughing at God
When there’s a famine or fire or flood

But God can be funny
At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or
Or when the crazies say He hates us
And they get so red in the head you think they’re ’bout to choke
God can be funny,
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious
Ha ha
Ha ha

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
When they’ve lost all they’ve got
And they don’t know what for

No one laughs at God on the day they realize
That the last sight they’ll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes
No one’s laughing at God when they’re saying their goodbyes

But God can be funny
At a cocktail party when listening to a good God-themed joke, or
Or when the crazies say He hates us
And they get so red in the head you think they’re ’bout to choke
God can be funny,
When told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie who does magic like Houdini
Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one laughing at God in hospital
No one’s laughing at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God when they’re starving or freezing or so very poor

No one’s laughing at God
No one’s laughing at God
No one’s laughing at God
We’re all laughing with God

Just wondering if any of you guys have heard this song and/or what you think of it.

Some people say it is an endorsement of theism and others

say its actually endorsing or reinforcing Atheism.

What do you think?

Here is someone else’s comment on another site regarding this very song and what they thought of it. I think it explains some thoughts I had about this song. Especially the confusing last line or last few words that is.

“I agree with most here; this song is highlighting the two-faced ability of human beings. We forget God and mock Him when things are going well for us. We laugh at the “super-religious”, make jokes, forget what God is all about, by believing in men to help us get miracles when we should be relying on God and His instructions, not what a man tells us to do to get miracles. I see this happen so often with prayer cloths and special water that will be sent to you if you only send a specified monetary amount to the “miracle worker.” If these people have your best interest in mind, why don’t they help you without any monetary gifts? Why do they have to gain financially. But that’s another talk altogether… back to my interpretation….

As for the line where Regina says “we are laughing with God”, I don’t think it’s all that deep as others are making it. Have you ever heard someone saying, “I’m not laughing at you, I’m laughing with you.”? It is a very sarcastic comment one makes when you really are laughing AT the person, but don’t want them to know. It’s an ironic statement when you say it to God, because though you think you are fooling God by saying, “I’m not laughing at you, I’m laughing with you.” God knows all, so you are only fooling yourself.”

People know God exists. They just don’t want to admit it because of the implications on their life. When things are good, they feel comfortable with joking about God. When things are bad, they admit the truth although they may not say it with their mouth. As soon as the danger passes, their pride rears up again and they blame the calamity on God and joke again.

Daniel 5 – Belshazzar, the king of Babylon, is having a wild party using the utensils from the Jewish Temple. Then, a finger starts writing on the wall. “9 Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled, his countenance was changed, and his lords were astonished.” Daniel is called to interpret the dream. Daniel tells Belshazzar that:
    1. God has numbered his kingdom and finished it (MENE)
    2. he has been measured and found wanting (TEKEL)
    3. his kingdom is now divided and given to the Medes and the Persians (PERES)
“30 That very night Belshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, was slain. 31 And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.”

    Pride is the real killer…

“…whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” ~ James 4:14
